This double degree provides graduates with skills and qualifications to practice as a scientist in industry and/or as a teacher in secondary schools. It provides opportunities to combine rigorous study in Mathematics (the 'major'), with support studies in another teaching area of their choice. It is designed to give graduates a comprehensive foundation in the mathematical sciences and the necessary skills for effective classroom communication at the secondary school level. The solid foundation in the mathematical sciences will offer graduates employment other than in teaching, such as employment in government departments and authorities, research organisations, business and industry. The intent is to produce graduates with teaching skills and a sound foundation in a science discipline.
Applicable Mathematics or Calculus. If Calculus is not studied, then a bridging unit may be required.
Applicants for this course should refer to the Criminal Record Screening/Clearance Section of this publication. The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course. The Faculty of Education requires all Secondary Education students to pass a literacy, numeracy and ICT competency test in the first year of the degree. Students who do not pass will be required to take additional study in order to meet competency requirements in these areas. Professional Practice in school settings is a core requirement of the degree and may involve out of semester commitment by students.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
The course is of four years full-time or equivalent part-time study.
Students enrolled in the double degree must pass all units in the education component to gain accreditation and must successfully complete one major stream of mathematics. Students may elect to transfer to a single degree in one of the two disciplines. In this event, the relevant Head of School shall determine the amount of credit to be transferred to the single degrees.
This course is recognised nationally as an initial pre-service teaching qualification. Graduates are eligible for membership of the Australian Mathematical Society and the Australian Society of Operations Research.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
