305551 v.1 Bachelor of Science (Physics), Bachelor of Education (Secondary Education)
BSc(Curtin), BEd(Curtin)
Introduction
This double degree provides graduates with skills and qualifications to practice as a scientist in industry and/or as a teacher in secondary schools. It provides students with opportunities to combine rigorous study in physics (the 'major'), with support studies in another teaching area of their choice. The program provides for advanced study in the two major teaching areas of Physics and Mathematics. It also contains a substantial component of computational studies, makes extensive use of IT in most subjects, and provides a unique exposure to innovative physics teaching techniques which will assist prospective teachers in integrating such techniques and IT into their own teaching. Three additional optional units are available which can be taken in complementary teaching areas such as Chemistry, Biology or Geology.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
TEE Physics and Calculus or Applicable Mathematics.
Specific Requirements
The Faculty of Education requires all Secondary Education students to pass a literacy, numeracy and ICT competency test in the first year of the degree. Students who do not pass will be required to take additional study in order to meet competency requirements in these areas. Professional Practice in school settings is a core requirement of the degree and may involve out of semester commitment by students. Applicants for this course should refer to the Criminal Record Screening/Clearance Section of this publication. The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course.
Note
Able students with high aggregates or other evidence of academic achievement who do not meet formal entry requirements may still be considered. Enquiries should be directed to the Course Co-ordinator and/or the Head of Department.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
The course is four years full-time or equivalent part-time study.
Course Organisation
Students enrolled in the double degree must pass all units in the education component to gain accreditation and must successfully complete the major stream in physics. Students may elect to transfer to a single degree in one of the two disciplines. In this event, the relevant Head of Department shall determine the amount of credit transferred to the single degree.
Professional Recognition
This course is recognised nationally as an initial pre-service teaching qualification. Graduates will be eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Physics.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
