Syllabus: | Elements of crystallography. Scattering of radiation by crystals. Imperfections in crystals. Lattice vibration theory of phonon model and thermal properties. Free electrons in crystals. Electrical conductivity and the band theory. Introduction to the physics of semiconductor devices. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have gained a working appreciation of the structural and behavioural aspects of solids, with emphasis on crystallography, scattering of radiation by solids, thermal properties and electronic properties. |
