Introduction
This course provides a balance between broad-based core knowledge, and professional and practical skills. Core studies cover the fundamentals of scientific and management knowledge. The discipline studies combine each of these two areas and require the application of theoretical studies to develop a skilled and proficient approach to the management of health and safety concerns. The course may be of particular interest to those with some previous qualifications and work experience in health and safety intending to complete a degree level course. Graduates are typically employed in industry or government positions.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
One TEE mathematics subject and one TEE science subject. Applicants without these may be considered.
Specific Requirements
STAT elements considered are E and either V or Q. Applicants for this course should refer to the Communicable Diseases and Criminal Record Screening/Clearance Section of this publication. Evidence of the successful completion of an approved course in first aid is required before an award is granted.
Note
Mature aged applicants should refer to the standard mature aged qualifications that are accepted in lieu of a secondary school based TEE.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
This course is three years full-time or equivalent part-time study. The course is available in a flexible learning mode, with most units offered primarily as external subjects. Some first year and optional units may be taken internally.
Intermediate Awards
A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of the Associate Degree in Occupational Health and Safety may apply under exceptional circumstance provisions for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of School. For further definition refer to the Statement and Awards section under General Information section in the Curtin Courses Handbook.
Course Organisation
Some of the external units incorporate non-compulsory on-campus sessions during the semester.
Professional Recognition
Eligible for membership with the Safety Institute of Australia (not required to practice profession). Eligible for membership with the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (U.K.) (not required to practice profession).
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
