303269 v.1 Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Engineering) Bachelor of Commerce (Management)

BEng(Curtin), BCom(Curtin)
Introduction
This double degree equips students to work in a professional capacity in both technical and business areas of the mining and energy industries, through a strategic alliance between the Western Australian School of Mines' and the Curtin Business School. In the engineering degree, students major in mining engineering and management in the commerce degree.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
TEE Applicable Mathematics and Calculus. Physics is also required for the Mining Engineering or Mining Geology streams. Alternatively Chemistry is required for Minerals Engineering. Well performed applicants without all prerequisites may still be considered.

Specific Requirements
STAT elements considered are E and either V or Q.

Note
In certain cases, the need to complete special units may result in an extension of studies beyond the normal length of the course.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability
This course is five years full-time or equivalent part-time study. The first four years which focus primarily on engineering are conducted by the Western Australian School of Mines (Bentley and Kalgoorlie). The final year is conducted on the Bentley campus by the Curtin Business School.

Course Organisation
Students enrolled in the double degree program may elect to transfer to a single degree course in one of the two disciplines. In this event the relevant Senior Academic shall determine the amount of credit to be transferred to the single degree.

Professional Recognition
The Bachelor of Engineering is recognised by the Australisian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and is accredited by the Institution of Engineers, Australia. Graduates, after a set period of time in industry, cam apply to the Deparment of Industry and Resources (WA) to sit for examinations qualifying them for the various statutory Certificates of Competency (Underground Supervisor, Quarry Manager, and First Class Manager). Curtin Business School courses are designed wherever possible to conform to the membership standards of the relevant professional bodies with which students are likely to be associated after graduation.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study. Some costs are required for associated field trips. A requirement for graduation is the successful completion of a Senior First Aid certificate which participants are expected to pay.
