Syllabus:

Factors controlling excavation behaviour. Rock mass characterisation and classification. Strength of rock and rock masses. In-situ and induced stress and failure criteria. Stability of underground excavations. Pillar design. Support and reinforcement. Development and production blasting. Geotechnical instrumentation. Minefill. Numerical modelling of mining sequences. Mine seismicity. Ground subsidence due to underground workings.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Understood rock reinforcement as it applies to the Australian environment and the interaction between rock mechanics and design.
