Syllabus:

Risk Management. Accident sources, consequences and preventative action. Personal health and safety. Process safety analysis. Loss prevention. Process safety in design. Process safety in operations. Defining and quantifying risk. Checklists. HAZOP studies. HAZAN techniques. Human factors. Linking HAZOP, process control, instrumentation and alarm systems. Cost of plant safety. Environmental impact. Case studies of serious plant accidents.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have gained an appreciation of the inter-relationship between occupational health, plant safety and environmental protection. They will have become familiar with legislation and how it affects plant operation and the methods and techniques used to assess plant safety. They will attain knowledge of process plant safety from design to operations and developed an appreciation for the importance of environmental impact assessment. Students also become skilled at evaluation of detailed accident case studies.
