Syllabus:

What is risk management? Why accidents occur. How to avoid accidents. The consequences. Personal health and safety. Process safety analysis. Loss prevention. Process safety in design and operations. Defining and quantifying risk. Checklists. HAZOP studies. HAZAN techniques. Human factors. Linking HAZOP, process control, instrumentation and alarm systems. Cost of plant safety. Environmental impact. Case studies of serious plant accidents.
 

Unit Outcomes:

To appreciate the inter-relationship between occupational health, plant safety and environmental protection. To become familiar with legislation and how it affects plant operation. To study methods and techniques used to assess plant safety. Process plant safety during design and in operations. The importance of environmental impact assessment. To evaluate and learn from detailed accident case studies
