Syllabus: | Engineering design, flowsheets, P&IDs. Materials selection and applications, including ASTM standards. Piping systems design - fluid flow/pipe friction and mechanical design of piping systems. Valves. Prime movers. Pressure vessels. Foundation and structural design. Equipment design - rules of thumb, preliminary sizing, scale-up, mixing. Utilities - steam systems, plant gases, refrigeration systems. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have an appreciation of the mechanical design aspects associated with a chemical plant and an understanding of the role of the mechanical engineer in plant design and operations. |
