306910 v.1 Bachelor of Agribusiness (Agribusiness Marketing), Bachelor of Science (Food Science and Technology)
BAgribus(Curtin), BSc(Curtin)
Introduction
This double degree emphasises post-harvest technologies together with business and agribusiness marketing. It will provide a broad-based education platform that will offer at its conclusion many career opportunities. Students develop an understanding of agribusiness management and marketing along with skills in food technology. They will be trained in all food commodity groups but will have the opportunity to be able to specialise in areas of their choice. There is increasing demand for cost effective food commodities to be developed which utilise and add value to local agricultural produce and have long shelf-life properties. Agricultural producers are increasingly aware of consumer demands and expectations and are endeavouring to respond accordingly. Together, agribusiness and food science represent a continuum from agricultural production, post-harvest technologies, food processing, management of related private and government businesses, trade of commodities and food products, food marketing and public health.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
None. Chemistry or Physical Science and Applicable Mathematics are desirable.
Specific Requirements
STAT elements considered are E and either V or Q. A minimum of 12 weeks professional practice in agribusiness marketing is required in fourth year.
Note
Prior learning in prerequisite areas are considered on an individual basis.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
This course is four years full-time or equivalent part-time.
Course Organisation
The first year will highlight global food production and nutrition systems as well as provide an introduction to fundamental basic sciences that underpin food science technologies. Students will be introduced to agribusiness systems, including food and fibre production systems. The principles of post-harvest business practices will also be explored. In second year core science units which underpin food manufacture are provided and selected food commodity groups taught in detail. Agricultural and food processing practices and economics are taught as specialised modular units. In third year additional food commodity sectors are taught. Fourth year focuses on specialised units in corporate business practices and agribusiness marketing.
Professional Recognition
Graduates of the Bachelor of Agribusiness (Agribusiness Marketing) are eligible to become members of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Scientists and Technologists (AIAST). The Bachelor of Science (Food Science and Technology) is accredited by the Australian Institute of Food Science Technologists.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
