BEng(Curtin), BEng(Hons)(Curtin)
Course CRICOS Code: 056847A
Registered full-time Duration for International Onshore Students on student visas:
4 Years
This course offers a comprehensive training in environmental engineering for the mining industry. The Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) is a principal provider of graduates for the mining industry and has a long history of success in providing employment for its graduates. This course is unique to WASM in its focus on mine site environmental engineering. It is multidisciplinary and appeals to those intending to work in teams and with the community in finding environmentally responsible solutions to important engineering problems that face the global mining industry. It also includes aspects of mining engineering, geology, mineral processing, biological sciences and environmental engineering and has an emphasis on mine site planning, rehabilitation and environmental management.
TEE Applicable Mathematics and Physics or Calculus. Well-performed candidates without one of the prerequisite subjects may be accepted and required to undertake bridging programs.
STAT is not accepted for entry to this course but may be used to demonstrate English competence requirements.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
4 years' full-time or equivalent part-time study. The first two-and-a-half years of the course must be studied at the Bentley campus, while the final one and a half years must be studied at the Kalgoorlie campus.
This course has been accorded full recognition by Engineers Australia, exempting graduates from all academic requirements for corporate membership. To qualify for corporate membership of Engineers Australia, a graduate also requires a minimum of four years approved experience following the award of the Bachelor of Engineering degree. This course has been accorded full recognition by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
Graduates from this course are likely to be involved in mine site rehabilitation, the management of tailings dams, mine planning, environmental impact statements and the management and reporting of mine site environmental requirements. After a suitable period of employment in this industry, these professionals may move into head office positions, become senior consultants or work with government agencies or other industries that face similar environmental problems.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. Some costs are required for associated field trips. A requirement for graduation is the successful completion of a Senior First Aid certificate, the cost of which participants are expected to pay.
