Syllabus: Hydrogeology: Importance of groundwater and role geology plays in understanding, appraising and managing the valuable and hidden resource. Hydrologic cycle. Recharge-discharge. Groundwater-surface water interactions. Aquifer types and their characteristics. Hydrostratigraphy. Groundwater flow. Aquifer tests. Wells and well design. Groundwater quality and contamination. Western Australia groundwater systems. Hydrogeology in mining. Engineering geology: Engineering classification of rocks and soils, elementary rock mechanics and rocks as construction materials. Engineering geology of tunnels, open excavations, dams, reservoirs, tailings dams, and foundations for buildings and bridges.
