Syllabus:

Principles of mass spectrometer operation. Ion optics, ion sources, mass dispersion, detectors. Data acquisition. Measurement of isotopic abundance. Automation. Isotope dilution and measurements of amount substance. Modern mass spectrometers including TIMS and SHRIMP. A selection of modern applications in fields such as health science, geoscience, planetary science, nucleoastrophysics and metrology.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this course students will be able to present the mass spectrometer as an application of fundamental physical principles, convey the importance of accurate and precise measurements in science, illustrate how mass spectrometers are used to solve provlems in science and technology and provide an enhanced understanding of physics through case studies requiring isotope abundance measurements.
