Syllabus:

Basic demographic concepts in the analysis of fertility, mortality, nuptiality and migration. The Australian population. Elementary descriptive statistical methods. Modules which will discuss particular topics with a primary emphasis on Australia for example, regional and urban planning and development, migration and multiculturalism, the Aboriginal population, and women in the workforce.
 

Unit Outcomes:

Throughout the course, topics will be dealt with in two ways, essentially corresponding to what are usually known as formal demography and social demography, respectively. On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Adequately understood data sources and simple methods of analysis in regards to formal demography. Used these data and methods to understand the social aspects of population change and its causes and consequences.
