Syllabus: | Introduction to the sociology of capitalist societies. Basic concepts for the analysis of capitalist societies and the process of globalisation - production and society, class and social structure, organisation and bureaucracy, technology and work, power, resources and the state, elite and ruling class concepts, social movements, culture and ideology, mass media. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit, students will have- An understanding of the general principles of operation of capitalist societies and the features unique to Australia. The recognition that all social and sociological theories have implications for the distribution of power, resources, and rewards in society. Examined important questions about the validity of taken-for-granted and common sense `truths' about society, and the ability to argue in defence of contrary views. |
