Introduction

This course provides skills and knowledge in Internet practice, and an understanding of the growth, uses and future development and application of the Internet, as well as specific education in aspects of Internet use or development for - information dissemination and design, communication and community-building, policy development, and advanced research skills. It is designed to complement existing knowledge combining a general qualification with more specific educational opportunities to learn in a way that best suits existing needs and priorities. Creative overlap between current employment and study is possible.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelors degree in any field of study from a recognised tertiary education institution. Students without a bachelors degree may be admitted after successful completion of units in the Graduate Certificate in Internet Studies.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Credit may be awarded for prior learning and demonstrated existing skills.

Duration and Availability

This fee-paying course is of one year full-time or equivalent part-time study through flexible delivery using Internet technologies including additional class contact for on-campus students.

Intermediate Awards

A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Internet Studies may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of Department. For further definition refer to the Statement and Awards section under General Information.

Course Organisation

Students study four general units, developing their broad skills and understandings of the Internet followed by the selection of a specialised area. Learning takes place through a mix of individual study, using materials provided by Curtin in electronic or print form, and group collaboration and communication. Active student participation and immersion in the Internet environment is emphasised. Students may be permitted to transfer from this course to continue studies at a more advanced level in the Master of Internet Studies.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study. Students are required to have and maintain reliable Internet access.
