197904 v.7 Master of Engineering ManagementMEngMgnt(Curtin) IntroductionAn engineering management role is the long term function of many practising engineers. The need for engineering oriented management skills increases with career development. Many graduate engineers have received only an introduction to management topics at first degree level, some may have had none at all. Undergraduate management training should only be regarded as a base for enhancement of management skills by further advanced study. The Master of Engineering Management program provides a balance between engineering and business skills and is jointly taught by staff from the Department and the Curtin Business School in a format that integrates the functions and skills needed by engineers in management. Course Entry Requirements/PrerequisitesA bachelor of engineering or an equivalent qualification in a recognised discipline of engineering with a high aggregate, preferably with at least one year of relevant work experience since graduation. Specific RequirementsPractical Engineering Experience will be beneficial. Recognition of Prior LearningApplications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. A student may, under specific circumstances, receive a waiver for a basic unit. In this case the student must substitute an alternative unit approved by the Head of Department. Equivalent units from other institutions may be acceptable if approved by the Head of Department or Course Coordinator. Duration and AvailabilityThe course may be completed in 12 months of study in a full time study mode (3 trimesters of 100 credits each). Students can undertake the course on a part-time basis over a minimum period of 24 months. Students are required to undertake a minimum of two units per trimester (equivalent to the part-time program) and remain enrolled in consecutive years until the course has been satisfactorily completed. The Head of Department may grant leave of absence. Three intakes are offered each year, in January, May and September. Course OrganisationRefer to Course Structure below. Career OpportunitiesGraduates will find enhanced employment prospects with their original employer and with other organisations seeking experienced engineers with the skills to manage engineering technology. Additional Course ExpensesStudents may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
Availability
The information displayed above refers to study periods and locations where the course is available for first time entry. Students are normally only offered or admitted to a course once. *The course itself may not be available either solely internally or externally but individual units may be offered in either or both of those modes. Prospective students should contact the Course Coordinator for further information.
