167799 v.5 Bachelor of Social Science
BSocSc(Curtin)
Introduction
The principal aim of this course is to provide an introduction to social science theories and research techniques and methodologies.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
None.
Specific Requirements
Applicants seeking admission to the Public Relations program are advised to take special note that the offer of a student place under Code CUQS does not, of itself, qualify an applicant for admission to this program for which they must meet the admissionrequirements for the University's Bachelor of Commerce course in the year of application. STAT elements considered are E and either V or Q.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
This course is of three years full-time or equivalent part-time study. The discipline based majors are available in either an internal or an external study mode. Some students may elect to include a mix of both internal and external studies in their programs. A limited number of units in the Special Purpose Program Major in Public Relations may be completed in the external study mode. Most units in the special purpose program are available in the internal mode only.
Course Organisation
Students select, except those taking the Special Purpose Program in Public Relations, one or two majors in the following disciplines - anthropology, geography, history, politics or sociology. Majors other than these discipline majors can only be undertaken in conjunction with a major in one of the five disciplines mentioned above. A Major (consisting of the equivalent of 12 full units) must include at least the equivalent of four full third year units. Instead of a second Major, students may include a four full unit minor and eight full elective units in their course. Students undertaking the Special Purpose Program in Public Relations instead undertake a program of an equivalent of 24 full units with optional units selected from a list provided. The following minors are also available - anthropology, geography, history, politics, sociology, development studies, environmental management, gender studies in social sciences, globalisation studies, international relations, sport and society, tourism, work and entertainment in the new economy and south asian studies. Each student's program is planned in consultation with staff members of the School. Units chosen from those available in other schools are generally restricted to one per semester.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
Special Note
Students who commenced prior to and who are continuing in this course from 2001 have the choice to graduate with either a Bachelor of Arts (Social Sciences) or Bachelor of Arts (Major) or Bachelor of Social Science (Major).
