Introduction (HB)

This course combines the financial and economic resource sector focus of the Master program in Mineral Economics with the Curtin Master of Business Administration (MBA), which is of world-class quality having been internationally accredited by the association of MBAs. The Curtin MBA also ranks within the top 100 MBAs in the world (Economic Intelligence Unit). Furthermore, the course continues to foster a vibrant relationship with the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM). The course will provide students with a thorough foundation in resource sector management and contemporary business theories. Emphasis is also placed on the creation and critical evaluation of innovative ideas and strategies within ambiguous and contemporary business environments. The curriculum has a highly applied practical focus and is delivered by leading academics and business practitioners. It seeks to equip graduates with a range of analytical and managerial skills that are suitable for senior management and decision making roles in resources, mining and energy companies.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelor degree from a recognised Australian tertiary institution or equivalent, and at least three years relevant work experience. Selection, which is competitive, will be based on a range of information including grades achieved in previous study, referee reports, relevance of work experience, career aspirations and test results. Applicants are required to submit referee reports and a CV. Interviews may also be required. Applicants with three or more years of relevant work experience and who have completed four units of the Graduate Certificate in Business with an average grade or 70 per cent or better, will be offered entry to this double master degree in Mineral Economics and Business Administration. Well-performing candidates without an appropriate background may be admitted but will be required to complete appropriate bridging and special course units as prescribed. In certain cases, the need to complete these special units may result in an extension of studies beyond the length of the course.

Specific Requirements (HB)

The Graduate Board of Examiners requires, unless there are exceptional circumstances, that those with more than two failures in the course or more than four units with grades below 60 per cent be excluded from the course, so as to maintain the high standard expected of such a prestigious qualification.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability (HB)

This fee-paying course is equivalent to two and a quarter years of full-time or equivalent part-time study in trimesters and intensive study periods with flexible package formats. Normal entry is at the beginning of the calendar year (trimester 1), but May and September entry is also possible (trimester 2 and 3).

Intermediate Awards I (HB)

A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:

Intermediate Awards II (HB)

Graduate Certificate in Mineral Economics; Graduate Certificate in Business (Mineral Economics); Graduate Certificate in Business; Graduate Diploma in Mineral Economics; Master of Science (Mineral Economics); Master of Business Administration.

Course Organisation (HB)

Units in the Master of Science (Mineral Economics) program are typically available over three-week intensive periods in four and eight day modular blocks. Units in the Master of Business Administration are available in trimester and flexible package formats. Students can select half units (12.5 credits) and full units (25 credits) from the Department of Mineral and Energy Economics, and only full units are offered within the Master of Business Administration. Students must complete 450 credit points and a minimum of 40 hours of professional development to graduate with a Master of Science (Mineral Economics)/Master of Business Administration.

Additional Course Expenses

Student may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials.

Special Note (HB)

Prospective students intending to commence this course from 2010 should consult the Department of Mineral and Energy Economics within the Graduate School of Business to discuss possible changes to course completion requirements.
