Course Overview
Bachelor Degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in a discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications.
This course is designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Australia and any other countries that recognise an Australian teaching qualification. Specifically, this course provides a qualification for those intending to teach at the secondary level of education from Years 7 to 12. This course requires students to study a major secondary teaching area, selected from those that are offered at Curtin. Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of 21st century learners. Students will have four opportunities to engage in professional experience in schools, culminating in a final professional placement of 10 continuous weeks.
Course Accreditation
This course is accredited by the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia (TRBWA) As such, it is also recognised as an accredited initial teacher education program by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).
Professional Recognition
This course is recognised nationally as an initial pre-service teaching qualification. Initial Teacher Education courses in Australia are accredited by the relevant authority in the state or territory in which the institution providing the qualification is based. Accordingly, the Bachelor of Education (Secondary Education) course provided by Curtin University is fully accredited by the Teachers’ Registration Board of WA (TRBWA) and graduates of the course are able to register as practising teachers with the registration body in their home state or territory, based on the course accreditation provided by the TRBWA.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of this course will have the skills, knowledge and experience to teach in secondary schools and are qualified to seek employment in the Government, Catholic and Independent systems of education. Graduates may also seek employment in alternative settings and related industries.

Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for a Bachelor Degree are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au and include flexible entry pathways. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
Applicants need to have an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). Alternatively, the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) elements considered are E, V and Q. Please refer to specific additional academic entry requirements for the Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology Majors. Applicants will also be required to engage in reflection of non-academic attributes related to teaching. Students will be responsible for meeting any costs associated with this process. Entry to this course will not be possible through Professional Experience only: this is consistent with current practice for courses in the School of Education. If applicable, admission requires an overall International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic) score of 7.5, with a score no less than 7 in Writing and Reading and a score no less than 8 in Speaking and Listening. The date of the assessment must be no more than 2 years prior to the date of the application.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Specific Course Completion Details
Students are required to provide evidence of successful completion of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education students (LANTITE). Students are responsible for meeting the costs associated with taking these tests.
Course Entry/Completion Note
Students are required to provide evidence of successful completion of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education students (LANTITE) prior to graduation. The test is managed by ACER and details of the test (for example, sample questions, the Test Window dates, and registration) can be found at: https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au/. Students are responsible for meeting the costs associated with taking these tests, which are a national requirement applicable to all teaching graduates. Students must successfully complete all required units in the degree and the LANTITE prior to enrolling in the final professional experience unit. The successful completion of LANTITE is a course completion requirement. English Language Proficiency Applicants need to meet Curtin's English Language proficiency requirements. You normally need ONE of the following: • Must have a 50% minimum in English ATAR (or equivalent) • Completion of at least one full time semester (or equivalent) of Undergraduate level studies at an Australian university • Completion of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Diploma • Successful completion of two degree level units via Open Universities Australia (OUA) and English proficiency • Successful completion of two degree level units at an Australian university and English proficiency • Successful completion of the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)* • International English Language Testing System (Academic)* *Please note these tests are only valid for two years. Please refer to the 'Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements' document at http://students.curtin.edu.au/local/docs/English_List.pdf. Working with Children Check A Working with Children Check (as required in the state or country of residence) is compulsory. Due to the specialist nature of the teaching profession, and the professional experience practicum placement component of this course, all successful applicants will be required to have a current Working with Children Check and any other relevant State requirements at the beginning of the course and before engaging in any observation or practicum placement. If students have any doubt about their eligibility to acquire these clearances they should contact the local Teacher Registration Authority.
Course Organisation
Bachelor Degrees typically contain a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may contain a range of majors, streams and/or minors for students to choose from to pursue learning in a specialised area of study.
This course includes professional experience units and core studies which will be undertaken concurrently with optional units. Students will select a major secondary teaching area and a second specialisation stream. These will be sequenced pathways which have been designed to support and enrich students’ knowledge and skills. All students are required to successfully complete compulsory professional experience placements in schools as part of designated units throughout the course. Placements are undertaken on a full-time basis for the number of days shown in a full time continuous block and students need to plan carefully to ensure they are able to meet this commitment. The total number of days of professional experience in the course will satisfy all states' requirements for teacher registration. No more than 25% of professional experience days may be undertaken in schools outside Australia. Therefore, students will only be able to complete one 3 week placement outside Australia and will be required to complete all other placements within Australia. None of the four professional experience placements can be broken or split into shorter periods. The professional experience must be conducted as a full time block placement at the specified time.
