Syllabus: |
'Race' has signified many things over time - ancestry, blood, skin colour, foreign values and an inability to integrate. Yet it has been claimed that however much 'race' changes its meaning, traces of the old meaning linger. This unit looks at the past, present and possible future meanings of race and how Australia, in particular, defines and deals with race issues, focusing on the census as an instrument of bio-politics, racialised ethnicities, Aboriginal identity, 'whiteness', multiculturalism and genetic research. Cultural understandings of the ways our bodies differ are examined through the lens of scientific and every day practices. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
