Syllabus:

Traditional India. The formation of the social, economic, cultural and political bases of Indian life, the development of Indian religions and the impact of Islam. The pressure of modernity on 'tradition' in social, economic and cultural formations. The role of 'tradition' in contemporary political developments, plus a major research paper.
