Syllabus:

Measure of information, source encoding, data compaction, Huffman coding, binary symmetric channel, channel capacity, channel coding, information capacity and Shannon limit. Compression of information. The principles of error control coding. Linear blockcodes, syndrome decoding, Hamming codes. Cyclic codes, generation and decoding, syndrome calculation, BCH codes and Reed-Solomon codes. Burst error detecting and correcting codes. Interlaced codes for burst and random error detection. Convolution codes, code tree, trellis and state diagram, maximum likelihood decoding and the Viterbi Algorithm. Trellis-coded modulation and Ungerboeck codes. Introduction to Turbo coding. Selection of a coding scheme.
