Syllabus:

Counselling - the concept explored from a process of historical and psychologic perspective. Application to indigenous clients and settings. Counselling skills - listening skills - empathy, listening of silence, passive listening and reflective listening. Problem-solving - Maslow's hierarchy of needs, problem solving for need fulfilment, behaviours influencing problem-solving and steps or support in problem solving. Helping relationships, human problems and need for help, interpersonal and helpful relationships and implementing supportive counselling. Documenting, prioritising, team work, referrals, monitoring and reporting. Counselling role - boundaries, confidentiality, duty of care, cultural protocols, attitudes and values in counselling. Stressful indigenous situations - introduction to grief loss, discrimination, prejudice, isolation and specific groups, eg the disabled, alcoholic, drug addicted and the abused. Counselling to promote healthy lifestyle.
