Syllabus:

Consists of three modules: metallurgy, mining and mine finance and accounting. The metallurgy module consists of principles of metallurgical processes for the production of metals and minerals and metallurgical processes of economic importance to Australia such as nickel, copper, gold, mineral sands, alumina, iron, lead and zinc. The mining module consists of mine sampling and resources, exploration drilling, detonators and ANFO and emulsion explosives, mine access, ventilation and safety, introduction to rock mechanics, and sustainability in the minerals industry. The mine finance and accounting module consists of funding a mining project, financial markets, sources of corporate finance, risk and return and the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM); sources of corporate finance, project finance, capital structure, financial risk, management accounting, financial objectives, planning and budgeting, the break-even model, budget variances and financial control, capital budgeting and investment appraisal, cash flows, time value of money, discounting to present value and discounted cash flow (DCF) criteria of value.
