Syllabus:

Current approaches such as social constructionism, postmodernism, post structuralism, and narrative thinking have unsettled psychological ideas that informed traditional theories and practices of counselling. Starting with a feminist critique and the emergence of a 'third wave' of therapies, we consider how these changes have been reflected in practice, particularly the challenge to the position of the counsellor as 'expert'. The course will examine how context and culture constitutes our lived experience and therefore highlight the importance of 'understanding' and 'meaning making' between 'client' and 'counsellor'. Introduces concepts of the self, Constructionist approaches to counselling, solution focused brief therapy, narrative therapy, just therapy, spirituality and counselling. Attention will be given to the use of self and choice of particular therapies in practice.
