This course is comprehensive in nature and provides multidisciplinary education and hands-on training in petroleum engineering. Candidates completing the course successfully are expected to work as fully qualified petroleum engineers requiring minimum supervision in the upstream oil and gas industry. The teaching staff in the Department are professionals with many years of working experience in the oil and gas industry. This course is structured around a modular approach and each module takes one month of intensive lectures and application training on actual oil and gas field examples.
A recognised degree in engineering and certain science subjects.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
This fee-paying course is three semesters full-time, but may be completed over equivalent part-time study. Continuing progress is subject to satisfactory performance. A student will not be permitted to progress in the master program unless a mark of 65 per cent is achieved in all units. Students who do not achieve this level of academic performance may apply for an intermediate award.
A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course appear below.
Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Engineering
The course is organised on a block modular format with almost 50 per cent of the time spent on applications of the knowledge using real oil and gas field data. Depending upon academic background, work experience and career aspirations, candidates may choose a range of modules from an extensive unit list offered by various disciplines and acknowledged lecturers from other educational institutions and industry worldwide. Unit selection shall be under the guidance of and subject to approval by the course coordinator. Continuing progress in this course is subject to satisfactory performance. A student will not be permitted to progress iin this program unless a mark of 65 per cent is achieved in all units. Students who do not achieve this level of academicperformance may apply for an intermediate award.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
Extensive computer hardware and software are available for use as is the Society of Petroleum Engineers online information library.
