305928 (v.1) Geotechnical Engineering 361

Area:

Department of Civil Engineering

Credits:

12.5

Contact Hours:

3.0

Lecture:

1 x 1 Hours Weekly

Tutorial:

1 x 1 Hours Weekly

Laboratory:

1 x 1 Hours Weekly

Prerequisite(s):

302783 (v.1) Civil and Structural Analysis 262 or any previous version
AND
302787 (v.1) Geotechnical Engineering 262 or any previous version

Syllabus:

Stresses and strain in soils, shear strength, shear strength of sand, shear strength of clay, critical state theory. Soil bearing capacity for shallow foundations. Ultimate soil-bearing capacity for shallow foundations, Terzaghi's ultimate bearing capacity equation, effect of groundwater table, factor of safety, general bearing capacity equation, foundations subjected to one or two-way eccentricity, plate load test - a field test, bearing capacity of foundations on slope, and bearing capacity of sand based on settlement.

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have an understanding of the concept of ultimate soil-bearing capacity and the mode of shear failure in soil. To appreciate the internal resistance that the soil mass can offer to resist failure and sliding along any plane inside it. To become familiar with the nature of shearing resistance in order to analysis soil stability problem such as bearing capacity, slope stability, and lateral pressure on earth retaining structures.
