Syllabus: | Slope deflection method and its applications to frames with and without sway. Moment distribution method and its application to frames without sway, with sway, with sloping members and multi-storey frames. Virtual work for frames and trusses. Influence lines for determinate and indeterminate frames. Influence lines for determinate trusses. Plastic hinges and collapse mechanisms, plastic analysis of framed structures. Civil analysis, tolerance and risk - collection and classification of data in civil engineering projects and installations. Application of statistical models to civil and structural engineering work. Specification of tolerances, acceptance criteria and evaluation of risks. |

Unit Outcomes: | The student will gain an understanding of the structural behaviour of frames and establish proficiency in the use of slope deflection and moment distribution methods of structural analysis to solve frame problems. The student will also examine the use of virtual work and influence lines in the analysis of frames and trusses, and establish the skills necessary to confidently perform plastic analysis of framed structures. |
