Syllabus: | An introduction to basic helping skills suitable for telephone and face-to-face counselling. Basic models of helping and problem solving applicable to face-to-face and telephone counselling. Helper ethics and responsibilities. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Demonstrate knowledge of a basic counselling/helping model. Demonstrate knowledge of a basic problem solving model applicable to client difficulties. Apply both of the above to face-to-faceand telephone counselling and helping situations. Demonstrate a knowledge of counsellor and helper responsibilities. Demonstrate a knowledge of ethics appropriate to counselling and helping. Demonstrate a critical awareness of counselling and helping services in the community. Generalise basic listening and communication skills to situations where information needs to be gathered. |
