Syllabus:

An introduction to the basic skills of interviewing applicable to a variety of human service settings. Basic active listening, communication and assertiveness skills. Awareness of incongruent non-verbal communication, and the influence of stereotypes andprejudices in communication with others.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Demonstrate basic active listening and communication skills. Generalise basic active listening and communication skills to the counselling situation. Generalise basic active listening and communication skills to consulting. Generalise basic active listening and communication skills to situations requiring assertiveness with clients and colleagues. Generalise basic active listening and communication skills to situations where information needs to be gathered. Demonstrate an awareness of incongruent nonverbal communication. Demonstrate an awareness of the influence of stereotypes and prejudices in communication. Demonstrate an awareness of all of the above in the development of rapport with clients and colleagues.
