Syllabus:

History of midwifery in Australia. Cultural context of midwifery. Role and practice issues. Legal and ethical dimensions. Theoretical and philosophical frameworks. Models of maternity care. The midwife client relationship - advocacy role. Collegiality and teamwork.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have - Evaluated the historical, cultural and legal antecedents of contemporary midwifery practice. Related legal and ethical principles to the analysis of critical incidents in midwifery practice. Evaluated a model of maternity care in terms of its effectiveness in meeting the health care needs of a selected childbearing population. Demonstrated the capacity to synthesise a midwifery based framework of maternity care. Developed strategies to effect positive change in maternity care.
