GradDipTESOL(Curtin)

Introduction

This course is for qualified teachers who want concentrated work in the theory and practice of teaching English as a second language. Although the course is practical in nature, its theoretical basis allows students to make professional development a natural part of their teaching careers. It is designed to meet the needs of teachers who want to work in Australia and overseas and is open to international students.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

An approved bachelor degree or equivalent, a relevant teaching qualification, and appropriate teaching experience.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Under certain circumstances, students who have successfully completed the Graduate Certificate TESOL will be eligible for up to 100 credit points recognition of prior learning.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is of one year full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Course Organisation

Students study an applied linguistics unit in each semester together with a TESOL methodology unit. Additionally there are units for individual study which can take the form of approved electives. Possible electives include units in Asian languages -Korean, Thai, Indonesian and Japanese. Students whose first language is not English may be required to take units in English language development.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
