It takes a special person to become an Ambulance Paramedic. They put themselves in the front-line of medical care every day making life-changing decisions. Their role is to respond to emergency calls from the public, assisting pre-hospital care. This creative, innovative major addresses the changing healthcare environment, with an interprofessional health education focus and specialised fieldwork experience. The first year of the degree is undertaken within the Health Sciences interprofessional first year structure. Clinical laboratories will be delivered by the St John Ambulance WA College of Pre-Hospital Care.

Major Entry/Completion Note
To be eligible to complete the degree program students must maintain employment with St John Ambulance WA as an Ambulance Officer. Upon the successful completion of all academic and on-road practical requirements you will graduate as a degree qualified St John Ambulance Paramedic.
Major/Minor/Stream Organisation
First year units include: Paramedicine Clinical Practice, Parmamedical Professional Practice, Applied Paramedic Bioscience, Behavioural Health Science for Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine and Practice of Public Health.
Major/Stream Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. demonstrate accountable, safe, effective and innovative paramedic practice incorporating research evidence and related professional competences.
2. use reflective, evidence based and problem solving approaches to the provision of paramedicine practice.
3. access, critically evaluate and utilise health care information in the assessment and management of prehospital patients and groups
4. communicate effectively with clients, families, communities and other health professionals in the pre-hospital and primary health contexts
5. use technologies that assist the paramedic to provide quality patient care within a changing health care environment
6. be an independent, self-directed learner who constructively reflects upon the health, social and educational experiences gained through experience and further education and research
7. incorporate regional, national, and global trends and innovations in health care into paramedic practice
8. incorporate social, economic and cultural differences in the provision of culturally appropriate and sensitive care to clients in a prehospital or primary health setting
9. demonstrate ethical practice in accordance with legislation, paramedic practice standards and professional codes of conduct

# Students will need to maintain employment as a student paramedic to complete the paramedicine course.
* If the conditions of employment are not met OR employment with SJAA is discontinued, enrolment will be transferred to the Health Sciences Major.
** Students who continue with the Health Sciences Major for Year 2 & 3 will be required to study Practice of Public Health 180 2nd year.
