183407 v.7 Postgraduate Diploma in Mining Geology

PGradDipMineGeol(Curtin)

Introduction

This course is based at the Western Australian School of Mines, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and is designed to meet the needs of recent graduates from traditional geology courses who would like to work as mine geologists. This specialist profession spans the fields of geology and mining engineering, and thus requires a unique blend of skills generally not provided by most undergraduate geology programs. Mine geologists are responsible for delineating ore within operating mines, grade control, resource estimation, and near-mine exploration. The course also acts as a Masters preliminary program for students intending to undertake the Master of Science (Mining Geology), but who are currently unable to meet the entrance requirements. It is also suitable for persons who have been employed as geologists in the mining industry for a number of years who wish to update their qualifications.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A bachelors degree from a recognised institution in geology or an allied discipline. Applicants may also be considered on the basis of the relevance and equivalence of their qualifications and experience.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
