Politics in South Asia. The nature of the colonial and postcolonial state. Class, religious, caste basis of South Asian society. Politics and society in South Asia. Problems of nationhood in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, including the development of political parties, popular movements, the role of the army and paramilitary forces. Regional conflicts.
