| Syllabus: | This unit engages students in an evidence informed approach to building knowledge and skills related to complex midwifery practice. Students encounter complex pregnancy, labour and birth, and puerperium midwifery care. In relation to the mother baby dyad with complex needs, this unit develops students’ understandings of collaborative and inter professional relationships in caring for babies with special needs, midwifery emergencies, perinatal mental health, bio psychosocial factors and cultural and developmental dimensions. Students engage with the historical and political contexts of midwifery from local and international perspectives, models of woman-centred maternity care, consumer advocacy and partnership. The needs of Aboriginal and culturally and linguistically diverse women along with maternal and perinatal outcomes are important learning areas of the unit. |
