| Syllabus: | Students will gain an appreciation of Indigenous people’s history, health, wellness and culture – locally, nationally and globally. In doing so the impact of shared history and policy on Indigenous Australians’ health and wellbeing will be explored, including Australian Indigenous perspectives on health, illness, disability and access to health care. The physical, spiritual, social, economic and cultural wellbeing of Australian Indigenous peoples will be examined. Students will gain an understanding of the health conditions prevalent within local and national Indigenous communities and will explore health disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. The unit will explore global indigenous perspectives and experiences related to health as well as social determinants of health and their impact within vulnerable communities. Students will be challenged to reflect on their own culture and its influence on their professional role. This reflection will aid the development of cultural capabilities and beginning cultural safety for clinical practice. Nursing and Midwifery Standards of Practice in relation to cultural safety will be reinforced, including the principles underpinning nursing and midwifery care provision to indigenous and culturally diverse communities. Students will be made aware of Indigenous organisations supporting healthcare provision to enable them to advocate for and in partnership with Indigenous and culturally diverse individuals, families, communities and organisations to provide safe and quality nursing and midwifery care. |
