| Syllabus: | This unit adopts a hands-on, collaborative, approach to teaching both core and advanced principles of remote sensing and image processing. There is an emphasis on contemporary environmental issues including: vegetation mapping and monitoring, forestry, natural resource management and disaster assessment. Students will use Free and Open Source software making it applicable to a wide audience. Optical and Lidar data are used to cover a broad range of fundamental and advanced concepts in remote sensing including: image pre-processing, vegetation indices, land cover change, phenological cycles, fractional vegetation mapping, forest height models, and the impact of episodic weather events. Case studies are utilised to explore these concepts in the real world. Students will also work collaboratively to construct and execute complex environmentally based research hypotheses by transforming data into ‘intelligence’ via complex analytics and critical thinking. |
