| Syllabus: | Applied GIS adopts a hands-on, collaborative, approach to teach the principles of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The spatial problems presented gradually increase in complexity, enabling students to transform seemingly basic location-based data into useful intelligence. An abundance of applications are addressed, including vector-based geoprocessing, designing maps for communicating ideas, linear referencing applied to geological cross-sections, raster-based decision modelling, laser scanning for producing digital elevation models and derivatives, machine learning for species distribution modelling, climate change scenario modelling, least cost path analysis for corridor planning, measuring spatial distributions through time, introductory hypothesis testing and shark tracking. There will be a particular focus in this unit on the application of the principles of academic integrity and academic referencing conventions. |
