Curtin Scholarships Program

The 2012 Curtin Scholarships Program continues to provide generous support through a diverse range of scholarships. The program is geared to recognise individual high achievement and to assist students whose personal circumstances may impact on their university studies. It is continually revised to broaden its reach and to introduce new schemes.

Curtin Star Awards - for students who may not have an opportunity to attend university due to financial disadvantage. Students receive $500 - $2000 educational costs allowance per year.

Curtin Alumni Scholarships* - these scholarships aim to foster a stronger sense of family at Curtin and are only available to students whose immediate family members are graduates of Curtin or WAIT.

CBS Aspiration Scholarships* - for students who select a Curtin undergraduate business course as their first TISC preference, have taken part in the CBS Excelerate program, and completed Accounting 100 in Year 12.

CBS Excellence Scholarships - for students who select an eligible Curtin undergraduate business course as their first TISC preference, score an ATAR of 96 or higher, and receive an offer of a place into that course. No application is required. Students receive $3000 educational costs allowance per year.

Engineering Excellence Scholarships - for students, who select a Curtin undergraduate engineering course as their first TISC preference, score an ATAR of 96 or higher, and receive an offer of a place into that course. No application is required. Students receive $3000 educational costs allowance per year.

Financial Support Grants - for enrolled students who can demonstrate significant financial hardship. One-off cash payments of up to $1000 are offered.

Health Sciences Excellence Scholarships - for students who select an eligible Curtin undergraduate health science course as their first TISC preference, score an ATAR of 96 or higher, and receive an offer of a place into that course. No application is required. Students receive $3000 educational costs allowance per year.

Humanities Excellence Scholarships - for students who select an eligible Curtin undergraduate humanities course as their first TISC preference, score an ATAR of 96 or higher, and receive an offer of a place into that course. No application is required. Students receive $3000 educational costs allowance per year.

John Curtin Undergraduate Scholarships - for academically gifted students who display vision, leadership and an outstanding commitment to serving the community. In addition to $2000 cash per year and payment of student fees, this scholarship also offers $6000 towards an approved study abroad experience.

LOTE Scholarships* - for students who have studied a language other than English in high school and continue to study the language at Curtin.

Principal's Recommendation Award - the principal of every Western Australian high school may recommend two students who, through sustained effort or improvement, are considered most likely to succeed in their studies, and who place Curtin as their first or second TISC preference. Recipients receive a one-off $1000 cash payment unrelated to any other scholarship award.

Science Excellence Scholarships - for students who select an eligible Curtin undergraduate science course as their first TISC preference, score an ATAR of 96 or higher, and receive an offer of a place into that course. No application is required. Students receive $3000 educational costs allowance per year.

Study Abroad Scholarships - for students participating in an approved student exchange/study abroad program once they are studying at the University. Scholarships range from $1000 to $4000 as a one-off payment, and do not cover any student contribution to fees component.

Specialised Scholarships

Aileen Plant Memorial Scholarship - for Indigenous students who have demonstrated an interest in gaining qualifications in health sciences, particularly in Australian Indigenous public health issues.

Charles Watson Scholarship* - for students who wish to pursue a career in psychology and who demonstrate leadership potential.

Chris Lewis Scholarship* - for an Indigenous student who has demonstrated commitment to the Indigenous community and who shows academic potential.

Elizabeth Jolley Memorial Scholarship* - to encourage and reward students who have demonstrated academic excellence through their ATAR and have an interest in pursuing a career in creative writing or literary and cultural studies.

Harry Perkins Scholarship* - for students completing year 12 at a rural or regional high school and who wish to undertake a degree at Curtin.

Hazel Hawke Scholarship* - for female mature-age applicants whose financial circumstances might otherwise prevent them from undertaking university studies, and who can demonstrate commitment to social and community issues.

Innovation Scholarships* - for students enrolling in an eligible undergraduate course who can demonstrate an understanding of their course of study and show innovative ideas relating to their future profession. Innovation Scholarships are on offer in Humanities and CBS.

Institute of Theoretical Physics Scholarship - for students who select the Bachelor of Science with a major in physics as their first TISC preference and have received an ATAR of 98 or more. Students receive $3000 educational costs allowance per year and payment of the student contribution to fees.

John de Laeter Scholarship* - for students wishing to undertake a degree in science, mathematics or computing. The scholarship will be awarded to the prospective student with the best overall academic performance in physics or chemistry, and one of the upper secondary mathematics subjects.

Lillian Passmore Donovan Memorial Scholarship - for Indigenous Australians committed to pursuing a career in social work. Students receive $2000 cash per year and payment of student fees.

Women in Engineering Scholarships* - for female students who show leadership potential and wish to pursue a career in engineering.

*Scholarships pay $2000 educational costs allowance per year.

OS-HELP loan

OS-HELP allows eligible students to access a government loan to help with the cost of studies undertaken overseas (travel, living expenses or tuition fees) as part of their undergraduate Australian degree.

A student must:

• be an Australian citizen or holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa
• be enrolled full-time in a Commonwealth supported place
• have completed, as a Commonwealth supported student, the first year of their undergraduate degree
• on return from overseas study, have at least one semester of study to complete the award course
• have not received OS-HELP or have only received OS-HELP once before
• be enrolled full-time with an overseas higher education institution located outside of Australia, where that study will contribute to the Curtin award course
• not have an overlapping OS-HELP loan from another institution during the same six-month study period.

Industrial and privately funded Scholarships

There are a number of industrial and privately funded scholarships or awards available each year for Curtin enrolled students.

Higher degree by research scholarships

Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) and Curtin University Postgraduate Scholarship (CUPS)

These awards are available to Australian citizens, permanent residents of Australia and New Zealand citizens who have completed four years of higher education studies to Honours 1 or equivalent. The scholarship is valued at $22,500 per annum (2010 value), tax-free and is indexed annually. The scholarship is tenable for a period of two years to undertake a master degree by research or three years for a doctoral degree. Applications open in August and close in October each year.

Curtin Research Scholarship (CRS)

The Curtin Research Scholarship (CRS) is an additional scholarship awarded to all successful new recipients of the APA and CUPS. All successful APA applicants will receive a Curtin Research Scholarship (CRS) to provide a total scholarship package of $30,000. All successful CUPS applicants will receive a Curtin Research Scholarship (CRS) to provide a total scholarship package of $25,000.

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)

These scholarships are available to outstanding overseas postgraduate research students for study in Australia. Scholarships are awarded on academic merit and research capacity to suitably qualified overseas graduates eligible to commence a higher degree by research.

The scholarship covers tuition fees at an Australian higher education institution for a period of two years for a master degree by research or three years for a doctoral degree. It includes overseas student health cover for the recipient and dependents. Curtin will provide a Curtin University Postgraduate Scholarships (CUPS) to all successful applicants, valued at $22,500 per annum (2010 value). Applications open in July and close in August each year.

Curtin International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (CIPRS)

These scholarships are available to outstanding overseas postgraduate research students for study in Australia. Scholarships are awarded on academic merit and research capacity for suitably qualified overseas graduates eligible to commence a higher degree by research.

The scholarship covers the tuition fees for the chosen degree at Curtin University for a period of two years for a master degree by research or three years for a doctoral degree. It includes a living allowance minimum of $22,500 per annum tax-free (2010 value). Applications open in July and close in August each year.
