Introduction

This course provides a comprehensive curriculum from the physical, biological, behavioural, and social sciences. The course features an integrated curriculum with case based learning. It is designed for those intending to practice as a registered nurse. The Comprehensive Stream has been designed for school leavers and mature age students. The Enrolled Nurse to Registered Nurse Stream is designed for students who enter the course with a Diploma in Enrolled Nursing with a minimum of one year of clinical practice experience and current enrolment with the Nurses and Midwifery Board of Western Australia.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Nursing General (Comprehensive Pathway) - None. Human Biology and Physical Science desirable. STAT Written English and MC Verbal. Nursing (EN Pathway 1) - less than 12 months EN work experience) - Current registration as an Enrolled Nurse with the Nursesand Midwives Board of WA. STAT Written English and MC Verbal. Nursing (EN Pathway 2, minimum of 12 months EN Work Experience) - Current registration as an Enrolled Nurse and have worked as an Enrolled Nurse for a minimum of 12 months at time of course commencement.

Specific Requirements

A first aid qualification (Senior First Aid Certificate or equivalent) is required by the completion of first semester of the course. Nursing students are required to complete a health screening series prior to commencing the course. Applicants for this course should also see advice for Clinical Health Science students (see page 36) and Police Clearances (see page 5). STAT elements considered are E and V. Students who have not successfully completed non clinical units must do so within a period of two semesters in order to complete the course requirements. A break of more than one semester will incur additional clinical practice.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Those with an Enrolled Nurse qualification will be awarded recognition of prior learning.

Duration and Availability

Three-and-a-half years' full-time study.

Course Organisation

All students receive field (clinical) experience in a wide range of community and clinical settings. These are coordinated with the study units and range from observation visits to more prolonged periods in selected health agencies where students are given increasing involvement and responsibility in nursing activities. Students are assigned individual patients, appropriate to their level of academic preparation and experience, for supervised clinical practice. Staff members provide individual assistanceand supervision of patient care. Students commence clinical experience in second semester with it gradually increasing throughout the course. It is expected that students will complete rural placements during the course of study.

Professional Recognition

This course has been designed to meet the regulations of the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia. Students who successfully complete all of the course requirements are eligible for recommendation by the Head of School to the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia for registration to practice as a Registered Nurse.

Career Opportunities

The graduate nurse is expected to function as an effective practitioner of nursing, assessing, providing and evaluating care for individuals, families and the community, and working with other members of the health team in hospitals. Providing bedside ;;care for children, adults, disabled people, the elderly and the mentally ill; community health agencies: child health centres, school health service, domiciliary nursing service, public health field work and health education in city, rural and isolated areas; medical practice: with general and specialist medical practitioners, industrial settings: occupational health and safety; defence services: Army, Navy and Air Force; overseas service: World Health Organisation, Save the Children Fund, Australian Volunteers Abroad and medical missions.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.

Further Information

Bentley campus offers two intakes a year, in February and July. Applicants for the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) course at Bentley may elect to commence their studies in February (Code: CUP1C) or July (Code: CUP2C). Applicants for both commencement times should apply through TISC in January. Applications for mid year intake which are being made after the TISC deadline would need to be submitted to the enrolling Faculty and may be approved IF there are places available. This is decided by the enrolling Faculty and School. International applicants must meet University entry requirements and Nursing English language standards. International students should apply through Curtin International Office on line. Students must meet English Language entry requirements. The course is offered at the Geraldton University Centre and the Great Southern Regional College of TAFE (Albany) through a mid year intake.
