3 Years
Mine surveying is a specialist area of surveying involving the measurement, representation and management of data associated with a mining operation. Mine surveyors are responsible for marking out, measuring and maintaining direction of all surface and underground workings on a mine site. In addition they are also legally responsible for the preparation and updating of all mine surveying plans for open pit and underground workings on the mine site, as required by the Department of Industry and Resources.
One TEE mathematics subject.
STAT elements considered are E and Q. A certificate of successful completion of an approved course in first aid is required before a degree will be awarded.
Applicants without the prerequisite TEE subject may still be considered, but will be required to complete bridging units. All students are encouraged to gain practical experience in mine surveying during the summer vacations.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
The course is three years full-time or equivalent part-time study. The first and second years of the course are taken in the Department of Spatial Sciences at the Bentley campus. The third year of the course is only available at the Kalgoorlie campus.
A student who has completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval from the Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:
Associate Degree in Mine Technology Mine Surveying.
Together with practical experience, this course is recognised by the Western Australian Mines Department for an Authorisation to Sign Mine Plans.
The course is designed to produce surveyors with specialist knowledge of underground and surface mines and a knowledge of engineering surveying. Mine and engineering surveyors are employed in the mining and construction industries. Because of the nature of the Western Australian economy, graduates have traditionally had excellent employment prospects with a variety of attractive career choices. These include the opportunity to work outdoors and indoors, the city or country and in Australia or overseas. In Western Australia, the largest number of opportunities are based in country centres, but in more remote areas many operations are carried out on a fly-in, fly-out basis. Mine and engineering surveyors often work cooperatively with other professionals including engineers, mining engineers, geologists, land surveyors and cartographers. This course contains a significant number of mining units and prepares students for operational management at the quarry manager level, with the appropriate practical experience. Further study is also available in this teaching area in the Graduate Diploma in Mining. This course prepares a person academically for operational management at the underground managers level.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. All students are required to have access to a portable electronic programmable calculator having hard wired trigonometrical subroutines and a minimum capacity of 10 significant figures. It is also expected that certain costs involved with associated field trips must be met. A requirement for graduation is the successful completion of a Senior First Aid certificate and this expense must also be met.
The first two years of this course are only available on the Bentley Campus. The final professional year is only available at Kalgoorlie to maximise industry exposure and employment prospects. Students must nominate a discipline upon enrolment.
Curtin University reserves the right to alter the internal composition of any course to ensure learning outcomes retain maximum relevance. Any changes to the internal composition of a course will protect the right of students to complete the course within the normal timeframe and will not result in additional cost to students through a requirement to undertake additional units.
