Introduction
This advanced study program has been designed to provide opportunities for both practising professionals and recent graduates to extend their scientific competence in an area of chosen specialisation. The postgraduate diploma is by coursework with options in physical methods of analysis, atmospheric and marine sciences. Instrumentally oriented units and projects provide the opportunities to develop a high level of analytical and experimental skill. Instrumental units offered include x-ray analysis, radiometric techniques of analysis, mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, satellite oceanography and satellite meteorology. Other units in the fields of properties of materials, marine physics and meteorology are available.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
A bachelor degree in science with a physics major or an approved equivalent. An appropriate honours degree or the postgraduate diploma is a prerequisite for entry to the masters course.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of prior learning in the course may be granted where candidates possess particular work experience or qualifications deemed to be relevant and appropriate. Published works, internal reports, conference papers, and consulting work could form the basis for an application for recognition of prior learning in the course.
Duration and Availability
This fee paying course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study. Flexibility in modes of study exist to meet individual study requirements, for example, a mix of full and part-time study, or students may undertake intensive periods of course study or project work over the summer or vacation periods.
Course Organisation
Specifically, the course has been structured to accommodate student differences and preferences in areas of applied physics and instrumental physics.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
