Course Overview
Master degrees (coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.
This course enhances professional career development, preparing nurses for advanced clinical practice with individuals, families, groups and communities. Nursing theory and research as well as professional role development are an integral part of the course, which is focused on the development of the multiple roles of the clinical expert through studies in specialist and advanced practice role development. Fundamental to this course is the development of leadership, critical thinking and clinical decision making capacity, preparing health professionals for a leadership role at an executive level. The Primary Health Care and Community Nursing Stream prepares registered nurses for a leadership role in primary care and community nursing and focuses on professional accountability and the development of competency at an advanced level in assessment and clinical judgement skills.

Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. Subject to the duration of the course applicants usually require a bachelor degree or equivalent (and may require relevant work experience), bachelor honours degree, graduate certificate or graduate diploma.
Specifically applicants require a bachelor degree in nursing or equivalent with a course-weighted average (CWA) of at least 70 per cent or a graduate diploma in nursing or equivalent with a CWA of at least 65 per cent, plus registration as a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) (Bentley location) or the Singapore Nurses Board (Singapore location), with a minimum of one year post-registration clinical experience. Evidence of successful completion of appropriate research units is an additional course prerequisite. Selection is based on academic performance, clinical experience, professional references and an interview.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Intermediate Awards
A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course:

Course Organisation
Master degrees (coursework) contain a series of units in a specialised area of study which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may also contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from.
Students will complete either a specialist stream in child and adolescent health nursing, primary health care and community nursing or general nursing. All streams focus on the development of leadership, critical thinking and clinical decision making. All streams also incorporate an individual health project which students will complete, during the master component of the course, under the guidance of one of Curtin’s experienced staff.
Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. graduates of the Master of Nursing can apply discipline knowledge, principles and concepts in accordance with relevant practice codes, standards and legislation
2. graduates can apply critical thinking and reflective practice to executive nursing practice to generate innovative solutions and advance practice
3. graduates can access, evaluate and synthesise information relevant to executive nursing and the promotion of optimal outcomes for clients
4. graduates can communicate effectively and work collaboratively with clients, carers, families, communities and the interdisciplinary health care team
5. graduates can utilise technology safely and appropriately for the diagnosis and management of clients
6. graduates can participate in research and critically appraise research findings and incorporate evidence based knowledge into advanced executive nursing practice
7. graduates can benefit from exposure to Australian and Singaporean standards and practices
8. graduates can demonstrate cultural competence in the care of all clients, families and communities
9. graduates can demonstrate professional, legal and ethical accountability within the scope of practice for executive nursing practice
Duration and Availability
This fee-paying course is of three semesters full-time duration or equivalent part-time.
