Syllabus: Molecular biology of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Molecular basis of disease. Recombinant DNA technology in medicine: cloning, sequencing and synthesis, gene probes as diagnostic reagents and DNA fingerprinting, polymerase chain reaction in clinical diagnostics. Human pharmaceuticals: microbes, protein engineering, designer drugs and recombinant vaccines. Transgenics and gene therapy, social and legal aspects. Consists of five topics which examine techniques used in biotechnology: enzymes; vectors and applications; southern blotting and applications; polymerase chain reaction and applications (genetic libraries); and construction, use and identification of clones including sequencing and use of radioactive substances.
