Syllabus: |
Provides the background and fundamental knowledge in chemistry required for students studying in the area of aquatic science. Fundamentals of organic chemistry. Major functional groups of organic compounds. Constituents of natural water systems. Effects of biological organisms on water chemistry. Fundamentals of biological chemistry, with specific emphasis on biochemistry of aquatic animals. The language of biochemistry. Structure and functions of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids. Enzymes, hormones and neurotransmitters. Major biochemical pathways. Biochemical energetics. Chemistry of body fluids. Comparisons between land and aquatic animals where relevant. |
