Syllabus: |
Counselling - the concept explored from a process of historical and psychologic perspective. Application to indigenous clients and settings. Counselling skills - listening skills - empathy, listening of silence, passive listening and reflective listening. Problem-solving - Maslow's hierarchy of needs, problem-solving for need fulfillment, behaviours influencing problem-solving and steps or support in problem solving. Helping relationships, human problems and need for help, interpersonal and helpful relationships and implementing supportive counselling. Documenting, prioritising, team-work, referrals, monitoring and reporting. Counselling role - Boundaries, confidentiality, duty of care, cultural protocols, attitudes and values in counselling. Stressful indigenous situations - introduction to grief loss, discrimination, prejudice, isolation and specific groups eg the disables, alcoholic, drug addict and the abused. Counselling to promote healthy lifestyle. |
