179299 v.3 Bachelor of Arts (Art)BA(Curtin) IntroductionThis course of contemporary art practice develops competence in conceptualising, observing and analysing visual information and developing this information into coherent visual images in a variety of media. The course is interdisciplinary in nature and encourages consideration of the potential for incorporating conceptual and technical approaches from a variety of sources. Students focus creative work in a variety of disciplines, including fibre or textiles or paint, print media, sculpture, jewellery and three dimensional design, electronic arts, photography, installation and performance and audio-visual technologies. NoteStudents may be required to participate in field trips and/or short term internships during semester or in the mid-semester breaks. Recognition of Prior LearningApplications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Provision exists for entry to applicants who have completed a post secondary education diploma course or part of a comparable first degree program. Such applicants may be admitted with prior learning status if they can demonstrate the required skills and levels of achievement. Duration and AvailabilityThe course is of three years full-time duration or equivalent part-time study. This course is also available on-line through Open Learning Australia. Course OrganisationThe course has a common first year to introduce the basic concepts and philosophy of contemporary visual arts practice and to provide an initial experience in all of the major studio disciplines taught within the School. In second and third year, students elect a major studio area, a visual culture unit and a visual research unit. All are encouraged to undertake units offered by other teaching schools on campus. Additional Course ExpensesStudents may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study. Some units within this course may have a field component, for which costs may be incurred.
