MDiabEd(Curtin)

Introduction


This course is designed to provide health professionals with the knowledge and skills for advanced practice in the field of diabetes education. The curriculum is flexible to accommodate for the individual needs of participants. An extensive review of literature and research proposal or project development in a diabetes related field is undertaken.

Specific Requirements


Prospective students are advised to contact the relevant Course Coordinator to determine whether the University's Policy on communicable diseases applies to specific courses offered by this area before making application for the course. Please refer to the General Information section at the front of the Curtin Courses Handbook.

Recognition of Prior Learning


Recognition of prior learning is assessed on an individual basis based on previous completion of approved tertiary studies and related work experience. Applicants currently credentialed as a Diabetes Educator with the Australian Diabetes Educators Association may apply for recognition of prior learning in Diabetes Education 541 and Diabetes Education 542.

Duration and Availability


This fee-paying course is three semesters full-time or equivalent part-time study.

Intermediate Awards


A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of the Graduate Diploma in Health Sciences (Diabetes Education) may apply under exceptional circumstances for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of School/Department. Forfurther definition refer to the Statement and Awards section under the General Information section in the Curtin Courses Handbook.

Course Organisation


This course is available externally, some units may be available internally. Students are required to use the internet to support their studies. Students are required to participate in clinical practice (2 x 10 days) as part of the units, Diabetes Education 541 and Diabetes Education 542. Part-time students will need to complete the other units listed in the first year program prior to undertaking the Health Contact 590 or Health Project Preparation 591.

Professional Recognition


Components of this course have Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) Accreditation, 2003-2007. Graduates may be able to use evidence of completion of some components of this course as evidence to support an application for credentialling with ADEA.

Career Opportunities


Graduates generally find employment within the speciality of diabetes. There may also be opportunities to specialise as a Diabetes Educator.

Additional Course Expenses


Students may be expected to purchase of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study. Students are required to have and maintain reliable internet access and pay for the cost of obtaining and using internet access as part of their studies.
